Season is getting started.
The London Centennial Wheelers (LCW) was founded in 1967, Canada’s centennial year - a nod reflected in the club’s name. The club emerged out of a desire to bring organized competitive and recreational cycling to London, Ontario, at a time when there were very few cycling opportunities in the region. Inspired by a local race near the former Treasure Island Gardens (now near the velodrome), founding members including John Craig and John Vanderhoeven helped establish the club and launched its first event: a 25-mile time trial on Highway 74.
From its earliest days, LCW fostered both competition and camaraderie. The club quickly became a hub for weekly time trials, criteriums, and the iconic Springbank Road Race. LCW has long been a champion of inclusivity and equity in sport - the Springbank Road Race was notably the first in Ontario (and possibly beyond) to offer equal prize money for women, setting a precedent that many others would follow.
Over the years, LCW has nurtured provincial and national champions, organized local racing circuits, and expanded into touring and mountain biking. These efforts have made LCW one of the most respected and enduring cycling clubs in Ontario.
London Centennial Wheelers (LCW) is one of Ontario’s longest-running cycling clubs, with a proud history dating back to 1967. Based in London, Ontario, LCW is home to a diverse and welcoming community of riders - from beginners to seasoned racers. The club supports all forms of cycling, including road racing, time trials, mountain biking, and touring group rides. LCW members have represented the club at local, provincial, national, and even international competitions. With a strong focus on safety, camaraderie, and athletic growth, LCW remains a cornerstone of the cycling scene in Southwestern Ontario.
Joining LCW means becoming part of a passionate cycling community that values inclusivity, development, and fun. Members benefit from regular group rides, a structured time trial series, opportunities for skill building, and support for both recreational and competitive goals. Whether you’re training for your first century ride or looking to join a race team, LCW offers a safe and supportive environment to reach your goals.
Start by identifying what you’re looking for - social rides, training partners, racing opportunities, or all of the above. Then, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions. A good club should be open, communicative, and eager to help you feel welcome. Show up to a group ride or event and introduce yourself - most cyclists are happy to share the road and some wisdom.
