Forest City Velodrome

General News

Just a reminder that the Forest City Velodrome (FCV) is open for business, and remains a great place to maintain and/or build fitness over the winter months. Information about racing at the FCV, together with a FAQ about track racing, can be found at https://forestcityvelodrome.ca/index.php/racing/racing-faqs. Information about FCV training and racing schedules is available at http://racing.forestcityvelodrome.com.

It remains very easy to get started riding, training, and racing at the FCV (especially compared to the Milton velodrome) and the costs for participants is significantly lower than the costs at Milton, since there is no need for a UCI licence, and there is no track surcharge.

South"Wind" Challenge a Success

General News

The 2016 Southwest Challenge, last weekend, sure lived up to it's name.  With some rain in the morning, the day cleared and left all of us with extremely heavy winds to battle for most of the ride.  That didn't deter our riders though as we all tried to work together, to get home in one piece.  In the end, all was worth the effort as we enjoyed an excellent meal and the prizes giveaway.  Despite the lower turnout due to the weather, we collectively raised over $24,000!  Absolutely amazing!  It is just great that cyclist came come together to make a difference in a sick child's life?  I want to firstly thank our sponsors who financially supported us and believed in the cause, as well as all the volunteers who gave of their time to assist us on this trying day.  But I must thank too, all the riders who raised the funds and graciously came on such an inclement day, some even from afar, to put in an extraordinary effort for such a worthy cause.  You guys/ gals rock!

As part of some follow up, there are some of the SWC kits left available for sale.  We are selling a full kit for only $120.  We will be placing an order very soon so please let me know asap.  Also, we have Defeet SWC socks left over that we are selling off - only $10 each.  Don't miss out; once they're gone, they're gone.

Kristen Kit -- 2016 Rio Paralympics Bronze Medallist

General News

UPDATE 9/11/16: Kristen Kit and her crew won a bronze medal in the LTA 4+ competition at the Rio Paralympics, narrowly missing out on silver. Great Britain won gold in a time of 3:17.17, the US was second in a time of 3:19.61, and Canada placed third in a time of 3:19.90. Congratulations Kristen!

UPDATE 9/9/16: Although Kristen's boat posted the second fastest time in the LTA 4+ heats (behind the US, and just ahead of Great Britain) the boat did not automatically advance to the final. She and her team will race again tomorrow in the repechage. See: https://www.rio2016.com/en/paralympics/rowing-lta-mixed-coxed-four-ltamix4-heat-2

Club member and 2016 Women's Club Champion Kristen Kit is on her way to the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Kristen left for Brazil yesterday, and sent me the following message from Pearson Airport:

"I head to Rio tonight and we begin training at the Lagoa tomorrow afternoon. I am a coxswain in the LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) 4+. [AB note: LTA means that competitors have the use of at least one leg, trunk, and arms. Competitors use standard boats and sliding seats and races are held over 1000m rather than the standard 2000m.] The ‘plus’ denotes there is a coxswain in the boat (me!). There are two men and two women in the boat all with varying disabilities. My team and I begin competition on September 9th in the heats. We need to come top two to advance directly to the 6 boat A-Final which is where medals are contested. If we do not directly advance, then we race September 10th in the repechage. If we make the A-Final we race for a Paralympic medal on September 11th mid morning.

CBC is offering coverage of the Games although it is through re-caps. The schedule is here: http://www.cbc.ca/m/sports/paralympics/rio-2016-paralympics-1.3740283

We stand a good chance of winning a medal and are Gold Medal hopefuls; we came third at last year’s World Rowing Championships and won gold at the most recent World Rowing Cup this year. Our two main rivals (Great Britain and the USA) were not at the World Rowing Cup so this regatta is the first time we have seen them in a year."

Please join me in wishing Kristen and her teamates all the best in their quest for Paralympic gold.

Southwest Challenge 2016

General News

There is only a few more weeks from the LCW's very own and completely not for profit, Southwest Challenge cycling tour.   There is still time to register and or raise money and receive FREE registration.  All proceeds will be going to the Children's Health Foundation.  The tour again starts from the old Komoka community centre on Queen St.  The date is Saturday September 10th and as we have in the past, there will not be a Saturday LCW tour that day.  For the more experienced, seasoned cyclist or for those who just want a large challenge,  there is the Epic 180 km tour and the 110 km tour.   Also here's your chance to introduce cycling to a friend or family member who just haven't put in the miles.  They can try the 60 km Challenge ride or the new 25 km Family ride.  The SWC is fully supported and there is plenty of food and drink plus a prizes giveaway at the end.  A great time had by all.  We will again be offering a prizes for the KOM and QOM for the best of 2 SWC STRAVA  segments, which will be revealed on ride day.  So don't forget your GPS!   Tell others of this great opportunity to help the community and join us for this classic ride.  See you there!
