Springbank

Congratulations to Sandra Deegan, Will Simonds, Eric MacDonald, Andrew Botterell, and Jeff Schiller on their podium performances at Springbank; a great showing for LCW riders today! This is Jeff's fourth time winning at Springbank!

Also, many thanks to race director Andrew Botterell, the Springbank committee, and all of the many volunteers for putting on a great race once again. Without all of you we couldn't do it.

Pan Am Track Championships

LCW member Eric MacDonald will represent Canada at the 2012 Junior Pan Am Track Championships in Guatamala from April 23rd to 29th. Good luck Eric!

UPDATE:

Eric competed in the men's sprint event on Tuesday, clocking an impressive 11.4s (63.2 km/hr) 200m in qualifying.  This was a new personal best for Eric but was, unfortunately, not quick enough to advance to the top-12 competition round.

On Thursday Eric raced the keirin.  He had a tough heat, matched up against two medalists from the sprint, and had to settle for fifth place.  Moving on the repechage Eric placed third and was, unfortunately, eliminated.

On Saturday Eric raced in the 20km road time trial, placing 29th.

Overall it was an excellent performance for his first international competition. Congratulations Eric!

Tuesday night volunteers needed

Just a friendly reminder that we need volunteers to help run the Tuesday night training events. If you or a designate are willing to help out at one of the remaining April events please let Andrew Botterell know. If nobody volunteers we won't be able to race/train.

Not Just Another Touring Season

As we embark on a new season of touring we need to refocus and consider the issues of safety. Even though there are inherent risks involved with road cycling, many risks can be easily managed. One that needs attention is the issue of stopping at stop signs.

It has been noted that too many individuals in our club consider riding through stop signs as a right of passage. The OCA and LCW policies are clear that we are to adhere to the Highway Traffic Act. To do otherwise is to risk serious injury, the possibility of receiving a ticket from an unexpected police officer and last but not least the voiding our insurance.

Not only is cruising through a stop sign unsafe but it also sets the wrong example and perpetuates the public’s distain for cyclists. The minor delay in your ride is a small price to pay in relation to potential negative consequences. Furthermore, because we exist in a world of increased liability, we will be holding our members to account on this matter. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

2017 Club Champions

Addendum:  Congratulations to Daniel Gregory, this year's winner of the Roger DeRoo award for most improved rider!

With the last race for points for the season now over, a preliminary tally for club championships is now up on the spreadsheet under the Training/Results menu item.  Please have a look and verify that your results have been correctly recorded.  If there are any errors, please bring them to Lorne's attention by e-mail to lfalkens@uwo.ca within the week.  As of this time next week results will be final.

Preliminary results have Andrew House taking the overall "A" championship by 6 points over Eric Hueston in a competition that came down to the last race of the season.  A well-deserved 3rd place goes to Lucas Taylor, who also wins the u19 men overall and u19 men criterium championships.  Andrew takes the "A" road and criterium championships and Scott Breen takes the "A" ITT championship.  Congratulations to Joyce Spruyt on winning the women's overall, road, and criterium championships, and to Rosemary Wedlake on winning the ITT championship.  2nd place in the women's championship goes to Kristen Kit and 3rd to Amy White.  The u19 men road championship goes to Daniel Gregory, who also takes 2nd in the u19 men overall competition, and the u19 ITT championship goes to Daniel Nordemann-DaSilva, who also takes 3rd in the overall.  1st place in the overall "B" competition goes to Simon Graham, 2nd to Liam Langford, and 3rd to Jason Gardiner.  Jason Gardiner is the B road champion, and Simon Graham the B criterium champion.  Congratulations to all.  This was a well attended and very competitive year of club racing.

This year's recipient of the Doug DaSilva volunteer recognition award is Brad Nicol, whose many years of service to the club as treasurer, membership secretary, guy who knows the roads better than anyone else, and much else besides are unmatched, and well worth all our appreciation.

The awards banquet is scheduled for Sunday, October 1 at 6:00 pm at Chaucer's pub.  Tickets ($25) are available now through CCN Bikes.  The banquet will be preceded by an annual general meeting (no ticket necessary) at 4:00pm at the same location.

For the first time this year volunteer and performance recognition awards will be given to those involved with touring.  The awards will be classic, LCW cycling jerseys, as designed by Greg Curnoe.  Further details will be forthcoming shortly from the touring committee.

LCW club jerseys

Thanks to Amy's work, we have contracted with a supplier for classic LCW club jerseys.  If there is enough interest among club members, we could submit a larger order.  Jerseys are available in a range of men's and women's sizes and in three styles: Fondo ($89), Touring ($119, available in slim, standard, and relaxed), and Racing ($139, available in aero only).  Quality increases with price.  Prices go down if we can place a larger order.  A sizing chart is below.  Please let Amy know if you are interested, and specify size and style.  e-mail to amy@amykwhite.ca .  Orders close Nov. 1.
